Hello, I’m Judith, I created this site as an online journal of my lampwork beads and jewellery because in my world, it’s always about the beads.
I make lampwork beads by melting rods of glass. If you have never heard of lampworking and would like an explanation of what it is please visit my lampwork page
I started making jewellery in 1997 then in early 2001 discovered lampwork beads. I spent several months searching for a teacher in the UK before I found GBUK (Glass Beadmakers UK) and booked a class with Pauline Holt. I can honestly say it was a life changing experience and so much fun. I went home and set up in what was basically the tool shed in my garden, I spent every waking hour in there for months, playing, experimenting and learning. Eventually George took pity on me and we built a bigger shed, which is where I still work today with the spiders residing in their webs resplendent with cubic zirconia and scraps of silver leaf.
I like to experiment with layering glass colours, creating spirals and 3 dimensional shapes seeing the effects and interplay of light within the beads. My favourite beads to make are complex floral focals full of sparkle with cubic zirconia set in the center of the flowers and maybe a couple of butterfly murrini for good measure. Each one takes well over 2 hours to make but for me it is like meditation and the joy is in the making. One time I was making a floral focal and had been sitting so still for such a long time a neighbour who could only see my back over the garden fence felt compelled to shout at me to check I was still alive!
I love bright and shiny, I watch a lot of Science-Fiction and superhero films & television. I love hand dyed yarn and I knit so many socks, more than one family could ever wear in a lifetime so I recently taught myself to crochet and now I’m crocheting a blanket.
I have been married to George for
nearly over 25 years and we have 2 adult children, Natalie and Robert.
