It does look like it should just scrub off but no sadly not… I did dry them off but the clear spacers and also the base Effetre glass were barely etched. I suspect it was the frit stringers that were the source of the problem.

Julie: The fluid originally came as crystals which needed hot water to dissolve them and if they are left they re-crystallise so I warm it to dissolve them again. I suspect the heat probably sped the process up but also the flowers are from frit and maybe the acid was too harsh for such a thin layer or just reacted badly with it. That’s my best guess but honestly I really don’t know.. the plain clear Effetre spacers came out hardly etched at all!

That’s bizarre! And I take it it isn’t just the chalky stuff that you can scrub off afterwards?

I don’t heat my etching fluid either. (And it might be a teaching granny to suck eggs moment, but when you were checking whether they’d etched, were you drying them to do it? Cos when wet they will still look shiny).

OMG Judith, what happened? I read you heated the etching fluid … why? Is that the cause of the disaster do you think? Were you using Etch All or something else?
